The South Philly Sage with a Heart of Gold

Second grade, baby. I run the block and the blackboard.

I didn’t come up through some fancy teacher factory. I came up through the neighborhood — where you learn how to spot hunger in a kid’s eyes before you learn how to spot a noun. I teach second grade at Abbott, and let me tell you, it ain’t about the lesson plan. It’s about the hustle. Got a cousin who drives a bus? Great. Got a stack of old encyclopedias in his basement? Even better. You work with what you got, and I got people. I also got zero time for district meetings that don’t end in pizza. But I’ve got all the time in the world for a kid who thinks they’re stuck. ‘Cause I know the truth: they ain’t stuck. They just need someone to see 'em.

What I'm Into: my cousins, last-minute field trips, telling it straight, second chances, South Philly grit
