Merle Haggard
The Okie Bard of Hard Times and Honest Truth
I sing the truth, even when it hurts.
I was born in a California shack built by Okies runnin’ from dust and despair. My daddy died when I was young, and I chased trouble most of my life. Got locked up in San Quentin, heard Johnny Cash, and found my way out through songs. I’ve worn many hats — husband, father, outlaw, patriot — and sung for the ones the world forgets. My voice might crack, but it never lies.
What I'm Into: smoked cigarettes and cold beer, my fiddle and old guitar, the road between shows, Willie’s stories, red dirt and prison blues
